EASTON — The Easton Human Rights Committee approved a revised religious and cultural observance calendar for public schools, adding Kwanzaa and rewriting language on covered holidays. Treasurer Kathy reported the committee holds $4,879.88 after fair-related costs of $346.16. Member Jenny presented census data showing Easton is about 80 percent white versus roughly 76 percent statewide, and school district data showing the district is 70.7 percent white versus 50.8 percent statewide.
Member Michelle said the calendar helps schools understand that "it just raises that level of awareness that that kid might be a little bit more tired" around observances like Ramadan. The committee also voted unanimously to authorize an application and funds for a possible Lions Club Holiday Festival booth in December if a decision is needed before its November 10 meeting.
